The fact that DataD validates waste streams in MATIS on behalf of OVAM is not an administrative exercise. It is about optimising the quality of the data collected in MATIS and drawing up validation rules that can be automated over time. DataD is doing this for the third time, with the result that a number of automatic checks on commercial waste notifications are already being carried out on the reports.
Waste processors and registered collectors (IHM) report their incoming and outgoing waste streams via the materials information system (MATIS). This provides data that forms the basis for Flemish waste statistics, recycling figures and European reporting. However, figures are only valuable if they are complete, correct and consistent.
The final report shows that in 2023, only 596 of 3,646 registered IHM actually reported. The response rate among processors was also lower than legally required. From 2024 onwards, reporting will be mandatory for all companies involved.
The task was clear: increase response rates (to actively encourage companies that are required to report to do so) and improve data quality.
