Single-use packaging under examination for OVAM

OVAM has engaged DataD to gain insight into the types and quantities of single-use food and beverage packaging in circulation in Flanders. The market survey focuses on the hospitality, education and business sectors, all of which are being actively surveyed. More information about the objectives and research methods can be found below.

The research

Flanders wants to take further steps to prevent waste, and therefore also the number of disposable products, and to promote the use of reusable alternatives and systems. That is why OVAM (Public Waste Agency of Flanders) engaged DataD to gain insight into the types and numbers of single-use food and beverage packaging in circulation in Flanders. The market research focuses on the hospitality, education and business sectors.

DataD is the brand within the CityD-WES group that is responsible for market research, feasibility studies and marketing strategy. Collecting and processing data provides insights to make your company or organisation market-driven.

Single-use packaging is a cheap and easy way to package and transport food and beverages without too much preparation beforehand and cleaning up afterwards. Cheap and easy in the short term. The use of single-use packaging also has disadvantages, including the significant environmental impact caused by the consumption of raw materials and the generation of waste streams. This contributes to climate change and the litter problem.

To tackle these problems, the European Single Use Plastic (SUP) Directive was adopted in 2019. This is one of Europe's initiatives to tackle the problem of disposable plastic.

The aim of the assignment is threefold:
  1. To identify which and how much single-use packaging for beverages and prepared foods is currently used by educational institutions, the business sector and the hospitality industry in Flanders.
  2. To investigate the packaging with the greatest potential to be eliminated or replaced.
  3. To conduct a financial and economic analysis of a potential transition.

During this research, DataD will use a mix of methods: desk research, case study analysis, observation, interviews and a (digital) survey.

In order to reach as many actors as possible within the education, business and hospitality sectors, we are distributing a digital survey.

Online survey

In order to reach the target group of hospitality, businesses and educational institutions, a link to the survey is sent via existing databases. In addition, we invite all businesses, educational institutions and hospitality facilities to participate directly in the survey.

All participants will receive a comparative report so that you can benchmark yourself against your peers in the sector. There are also great prizes to be won! Click on the appropriate link:
